As the very necessary process of change begins at the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland I was invited by the EAA to take part in their Coarum workshop series to help shape the the RIAS' Five Year Plan. The Coarum (a Scots word meaning gathering) held at Helen Lucas Architects specifically explored communication(s).

Beyond the widely known and understood need for the RIAS to communicate better visually in print, online and in social media, my talk centred upon an open provocation: that of an Architecture Alliance.

Architecture in Scotland requires a diverse and active mosaic of grassroots organisations, civic and community groups, private practices, professional bodies, universities and semi-governmental organisations. Whilst busy with the day-to-day of architecture there remains a problem with overall engagement and communication towards the general public, Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament about the value of architecture and the positive contribution that architects can make to wider civic life and society. How could that be improved? My proposal focusses on a loose issue-by-issue alliance within architecture in Scotland to come together, lobby for and help enact change.

From public perception of architecture through to procurement, education and international representation there are many areas where a more coordinated approach from within the sector could have a more galvanising effect and decisive impact. Being organised is a critical requirement to being relevant. Architecture and architects face great change and many pressures now and in the century before us. How best to share thoughts, ideas, energy and resources and push for change?...
