The Closing Lecture of the Architecture Fringe 2018 saw three internationally recognised guest speakers explore the provocation of this year's festival - COMMON/SENSES.

Award-winning design critic, author and former New York Times columnist Alice Rawsthorn took us on a worldwide journey demonstrating where design was being put to use to support and enhance the common good; internationally renowned Glasgow based artist Jacqueline Donachie discussed the COMMON/SENSES provocation via a highly personal examination of her practice and work; and founding director of 6a Architects Stephanie Macdonald focussed on architecture as a natural part of our overall ecology and daily experience. 

Architecture occurs within a multiplicity of varying contexts, arrangements and expressions. It can be deployed for the greater good and harnessed for singular enrichment. It can be activated to induce joy and utilised to encourage fear. It can be programmed to provide the infrastructural genesis of further activity and applied as final conclusive decoration. 

The event was funded by the Scottish Government and Helen Lucas Architects with venue support from the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) at the University of Edinburgh.
